In an effort to support Middle Tennessee’s manufacturing industry, Nashville State Community College, Workforce Essentials and the Houston County Sheriff’s Department are providing training programs for Houston County Jail inmates.

The two-week training sessions include entry-level advanced manufacturing machine adjustment fundamentals, communication intelligence exercises, National Career Readiness Certificate/WorkKeys assessment-based credentials and OSHA 10 certification, a voluntary program that promotes workplace safety and health.

The two-week training program, held at the Houston County Jail in Erin, consists of 48 hours of material.

Vice president for Academic Affairs at NSCC, Dr. Carol Rothstein, said in a statement released by the college that the training will provide inmates a chance to restart their life, while setting them up for future success.

“The IRT (Industrial Readiness Training) program is a perfect opportunity to connect individuals with specialized training that will provide them a fresh start and set them on a career path upon their transition, while also supplying local industry with skilled technicians,” she said.

NSCC Workforce Solutions Consultant Larry Mangrum, said it also is about reversing the industry’s labor shortage both across the nation and in the Clarksville and Dickson areas.

“There is a heavy advanced manufacturing component in the Clarksville, Montgomery County area and down the road in the Dickson, Tennessee area,” Mangrum said. “These two locations are right near Houston County and are prominent places for manufacturing employment.”

Mangrum said that the program just graduated its first class of seven male inmates and has bigger plans in the future.

“During the first two weeks of August, we are hosting our first group of 14 female inmates for this training,” he said. “It will be a combination of Houston County and Stewart County inmates.

Following the second training session, there will be one more session for seven more male inmates during the last two weeks of August.

All three of these sessions are being funded through Workforce Essentials.

“It has been such a great partnership and we could not have asked for anything better,” Mangrum said. “The same should be said for our work with the Houston County Sheriff’s Department. They have been so engaging and supportive making this whole thing a great experience for everyone.”
