The Cheatham County School board voted last Tuesday to extend the contract of Director of Schools Dr. Cathy Beck for two years to June of 2025.

The board voted 5-0-1, with John Louallen voting not present, to approve the contract. Beck has been the county director of schools since July 2017.

The board had voted last month to allow the district’s legal counsel to begin negotiations with Beck. Her original contract went until June 30, 2023, and the extension takes it to June 20, 2025.

Her current salary is $140,000 a year, and the extension will provide an additional $2,500 each year.

Beck said, “I am honored by the School Board’s vote of confidence and look forward to the additional years working in the Cheatham County School District.”

Supervisor of Human Resources, Student Services, and Policy Dr. Wendy Cox talked about the district’s plans for recruiting faculty and staff. She said that attending job fairs and college fairs and increasing pay and incentives for prospective employees are options.

The district’s biggest staffing need is for bus drivers. According to the district’s website, base pay for bus drivers, depending upon experience, starts at $16,990 for full-time and $11,430 for part-time.

Beck said that each school in the district would be receiving Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) money for its arts programs, which includes art, music, theater, and choir.

Each high school will receive $40,000, each middle school will receive $25,000, and each elementary school will receive $10,000.

Cheatham County Schools Communications Director and Grant Writer Tim Adkins said, “By providing our students the opportunity to experience and engage in the arts, we support the academic, creative, collaborative and emotional needs of our students, equipping them to become critical thinkers and to shape the future of an ever-changing world.”
