Brian Zacharias and Ambar Marquis are Clarksville’s newest city councilmembers.
Zacharias replaces Richard Garrett in Ward 1 and Marquis will fill the remaining term of Jason Knight in Ward 5.
Both former councilmembers resigned in July.
On Tuesday, after approving Lisa Canfield as Clarksville’s next city clerk, the city council moved onto the votes for the new councilmembers.
It took several rounds of voting before achieving a vote of seven for each candidate, which was required by Clarksville’s city code.
Both candidates said it was the military that initially brought them to Clarksville.
Zacharias holds a Masters degree in education and is a teacher at West Creek High School.
“I believe I possess the time, energy and commitment to serve the people of Ward 1 and be their voice on this council,” Zacharias said during his introduction to the council on Thursday, September 2.
Marquis is employed by Shooter’s Gun Emporium on Warfield Boulevard.
Prior to taking questions last Thursday, Marquis impressed the council with the way she answered each councilmembers’ questions previously posed to the each of the 11 candidates who spoke before her.
Marquis said she’s impressed with the rural feel of Clarksville.
“There are neighbors here who look out for one another and have that sense of community,” Marquis said.

member resignations
Knight, Montgomery County District 18 Commissioner and Clarksville Ward 5 City Councilmember, resigned both of his elected positions due to residency and personal issues.
Garrett’s departure followed a months-long investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney General John Carney’s office in Montgomery County over his residency, which was out of his ward and the city limits.
Garrett has since been arrested and charged with fraud and perjury.
