Did you know Tennesseans produce 32% more trash than the average American?

With multiple waste management issues plaguing Tennessee — such as landfills filling up, the growing rate of trash production, litter and illegal dumping — action and collaboration are needed. The Tennessee Environmental Council is sponsoring 10 “Recycling Roundup” events across Tennessee to collect hard-to-recycle household items in underserved communities to reduce the volume sent to landfills.

Do you have items that continue to sit under your bed, in the closet or in the garage because you know they have value, but you just aren’t sure what to do with them?

Many people are aware of the traditional items they can recycle, like paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and cardboard via curbside pick-ups. But did you know you can also recycle many non-traditional items, ranging from electronics (your iPhone cord that is fraying; your cracked television monitor; your curling iron that stopped working), to mattresses, tires, old medications, ink cartridges, clothing, textiles and shoes? Yes, including the clothing and shoes no longer suitable for reuse!

These items often get discarded on the side of the road or in lakes and rivers, so TEC wants to provide proper end destinations and repurpose them if they have value because litter is a disservice to the environment and our community.

TEC is working through a United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) grant to create an educational and reproducible model for hard-to-recycle items to bring attention to waste and environmental justice issues. Getting otherwise discarded or landfilled items back into circulation creates jobs, helps the economy, improves the environment and reclaims the value of materials. Keeping these items in circulation is far superior to littering or landfilling them or leaving them unused at home.

So comb through your closets, go through your garage and bring your items to our Recycling Roundup event being held at TSU’s campus on Saturday, Dec. 10.
