It looked a lot like Christmas with a highly attended 36th annual Donelson-Hermitage Chamber of Commerce parade and an early Christmas present for the community with a first look at the design of the new library planned to anchor the revitalized Donelson Plaza Saturday afternoon.
“A Donelson Christmas” was a fun day in this city as the parade rolled down Elm Hill and Donelson pikes at 2 p.m. and concluded at Donelson Pike and Lebanon Road. Dozens of floats and entries delighted onlookers as the annual celebration was revived after a year hiatus.
The icing on the cake was the 4 p.m. unveiling of the design of the new library that took place at Donelson Plaza with District 15 Metro Council member Jeff Syracuse on hand along with Nashville Public Library Director Kent Oliver.
“This project has been in the works for a long time, and it’s a real pleasure to finally share these designs with you. When this new library opens, it’s going to be a staple of the Donelson community,” said Oliver. “Two stories tall and encompassing roughly 24,000 square feet, the new building will outshine the standing Donelson library in every way. I can’t wait to welcome you to our new library within the next few years.”
It will be four times the size of the current library. Officials said it will be ultra tech-centric and built for today. Fifty percent of checkouts are e-media related such as e-books, e-movies, e-music, e-magazines and more.
“Our new Nashville Public Library Donelson Branch has been a project I’ve focused on like a laser for several years working with Holladay Properties on the revitalization of Donelson Plaza to include the new library at the heart of the community,” said Syracuse. “It’s not only a modern, beautiful library, but it serves as a true civic anchor for our walkable, transit-oriented town center in the making, located just across the street from WeGo Donelson Station.”
Syracuse said construction should begin next June.
