Sumner County Fair starts Tuesday in Gallatin

The Sumner County Fair starts June 28.

The Sumner County Fair starts June 28.

The smell of popcorn, cotton candy, roasting peanuts will be wafting in the air next week when the 76th annual Sumner County Fair kicks off.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 28 through July 2 in Gallatin.

In the past few years, organizers said they have scheduled the fair earlier in the summer in hopes of the nicer weather bringing out more people.

“We did this last year in June and the reason being, I think its normally cooler and a lot of people liked that better too,” Jimmy Moore, president of the Sumner County Fair Association, said.

Like last year, the 2022 fair will be a carnival only without the pageantry, competitions and grandstand shows.

“Because of COVID, we didn’t have the fair in 2020 and last year it was still out there,” Moore said. “This year, evidently, it’s making a comeback, so we just decided to spend our money advertising the carnival. I think it’s best we don’t have the other things this year – I don’t know about future fairs.

“I know some people are probably disappointed because they can’t enter their vegetables or flowers, but no one has really complained to me.”

Moore said despite the 2021 fair only being a carnival, the attendance was up to a little more than 20,000, and he still expects another big crowd this year.

Put on by the James Gang Amusement Company, Moore said there will be rides for all ages – from small children to adults.

“Last year, there were rides all the way down to the creek – they filled it full,” Moore said. “They are bringing the same thing and maybe even more this year.”

Moore said the concessions stands will also likely be expanded.

“From cotton candy, candied apples, peanuts, hot dogs, hamburgers, and more – it will be full,” he said.

The fair will open nightly at 6 p.m. and will stay open until everyone is gone, according to Moore. Gate admission is $5 for anyone age 8 and up. Children age 7 and under get in free. Armbands for rides are $15 for Tuesday and Thursday nights, and $20 on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The fair is located at 222 Fairground Road.

“We’d like for all families to come out,” Moore said. “Everything will be clean – the grounds and the bathrooms will be clean. We want everyone to come have a good time and remember the Sumner County Fair.”
