Travellers Rest prepares for spring events

Historic Travellers Rest Historic House Museum is preparing for a full year of both onsite and virtual family-friendly events.

Programs and events at the museum, located at 636 Farrell Parkway, cover 1,000 years of history, from the Mississippian period Native American settlement through the 19th century using the cultural resources of John Overton’s 1799 home.

Upcoming events include:

April 11 (Virtual Event), 4 p.m. — Writing in the Age of John Overton and Andrew Jackson hosted by local author, Brian Allison

Learn about the art of letter-writing as it was done before the internet, the telegraph, and even the envelope. From quill pens to steel pens, sealing wax and pounce pots, learn about the lost art of correspondence as it was done in the days of John Overton and Andrew Jackson. Pay what your choose, but a donation of $15 is recommended.

April 24 — 10 a.m.-4 p.m. — Hands-On Spoon Carving Workshop by Bill Maddox

Learn the basics of carving a spoon. A spoon carving kit for beginners with spoon blanks will be provided. Participants will take home a completed spoon or two along with the tool kit. The spoon carving kit includes a hook knife, a sloyd knife, a detail knife, a leather strop, polishing compound and canvas tool roll. The cost is $65 per person. It is recommend to bring a lunch. Participants must have very good hand skills of strength and dexterity and be 18 years old or older.

May 8 — 9 a.m.-3 p.m. — “A Day Out with Mom”

A fun and educational day out with mom, or any motherly figure. Activities and artisans will include:

Roy Overcast providing pottery demonstrations.

Bill Maddox providing woodworking demonstrations.

Enjoy an herb garden tour.

Take a guided house tour.

Make a woodblock print Mother’s Day card.

Enjoy music on the grounds.

Enjoy a cup of tea on the porch of the historic home.

May 23 — (Virtual Event) — 4 p.m. — “Impactful Items: The Big Stories Small Things Can Tell”

The staff of Historic Travellers Rest have selected items in the historic home that have larger stories to tell. Items as small as a pair of glasses can give insight into the everyday life of residents of Travellers Rest in the 19th century. Pay what you choose, but a donation of $15 is recommended.

All onsite events will have the following COVID Policies in place, masks required, social distancing and capacity limits will be enforced. Hand sanitizer will be available. Any shared items in the programs will be cleaned between each use according to CDC standards.
