Humpday Throwback: Opryland USA in 1973

Here’s an image shot at Opryland USA theme park 49 years ago. Opryland USA operated from May 27, 1972 until Dec. 31, 1997. It attracted millions of visitors each year and gave many celebrities their first taste of show business. The park consisted of nine themed areas, dozens of rides, and Broadway-caliber shows featuring live bands and orchestras. As the Home of American Music, Opryland USA still lives on in the hearts and minds of those who visited its wooded trails, lazy streams, exciting attractions, and toe-tapping performances. One of those was John Davis. Here is his family photographed in 1973, the park’s second year. Note the clothes of the day and the very busy park. Pictured are his dad, Rolla Davis, in the straw western hat on the left, his sister Pam in the blue and his mom behind the girl on the right, friend Germaine Hovland. Davis said he remembers the tram and fun amusements. He also, that day, visited the old Ryman and Ernest Tub Record Shop, and the Midnite Jamboree when it was still on Broadway.Courtesy John Davis
