Bridge to be lit purple in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

On June 15, across the nation and around the world, communities and organizations will observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to call attention to the 1 in 10 older Americans who experience elder abuse, neglect or exploitation every year.

The Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge will be lit in purple June 15 to commemorate the day, launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

Locally, AgeWell Middle Tennessee convenes the Middle TN Elder Watch to foster information sharing and collaboration among organizations working to prevent and address elder abuse and exploitation.

AgeWell also sends a monthly “Scam of the Month” notice to make older adults and their caregivers aware of the various tactics used by scammers to defraud individuals, including IRS impersonation, computer repair telephone scams, elder financial abuse and identity theft. To subscribe to the free “Scam of the Month” email, go to the News & Events section of the AgeWell website, www.agewelltn.org. Click on Scam Prevention and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Founded as the Council on Aging of Greater Nashville in 1985, AgeWell Middle Tennessee champions informed and positive aging and connects older adults and family caregivers with trusted information and community resources in 13 Middle Tennessee counties.
