Homicide Unit detectives are investigating Wednesday morning’s fatal shooting of Jeremy Smith, 23, on River Road Pike near Gower Road.

A passerby called police at 8 a.m. after seeing Smith’s body on the side of the road. Smith was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died.

A vehicle seen leaving the area was stopped later Wednesday morning in Cheatham County, but after talking to the driver, officials determined the driver was not involved.

Anyone with information about Smith’s slaying is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.

Father charged with first-degree

murder in 5-week-old’s death

The father of a 5-week-old child abuse victim has been charged with first-degree felony murder after his son died Tuesday afternoon.

Youth Services detectives on Monday arrested Joshua R. Lane, 20, on two counts of aggravated child abuse. He is accused of inflicting life-threatening head trauma and bruising to his son, Deacon Lane. The unresponsive infant was taken by his parents to Centennial Medical Center on Sunday. He was then transferred to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

During an interview with lead Youth Services Detective Steffani Dahlstrom, Lane said he zoned out and may have shaken the child. — Staff Report
