Hermitage is set to get its first Chipotle Mexican Grill in the summer when the new restaurant opens on the site where a Steak & Shake Restaurant was recently demolished in the Hermitage Marketplace.

A fast-casual food chain where employees make tacos and burritos in front of customers, Chipotle expects to hire an average of 25 employees. The new location is under construction at 5000B Old Hickory Blvd. next to Famous Dave's Barbecue and expected to open in early summer, a company spokesperson said.

For 22 years, the former Steak & Shake restaurant occupied the site where it was built in 1998. Although the shuttered franchise restaurant sat vacant most of last year, locals noticed the easily recognizable black and white building was torn down last month.

Headquartered in southern California, Chipotle officials said the new Hermitage location will feature a Chipotlane, the brand's digital order drive-thru pick-up lane. Chipotle calls itself a longtime leader and innovator in the food industry, serving responsibly sourced, classically cooked, real food with wholesome ingredients.

Chipotle opened its first restaurant in 1993 in Denver. The company does not have a franchise model as it owns and operates all 2,663 nationwide restaurants. With 27 stores in Tennessee, seven locations are in the greater Nashville area. Hermitage’s location will be the first Chipotle east of downtown Nashville in Davidson County.
