A Metro Nashville Police Officer shot and killed a 47-year-old man in North Nashville late Sunday night.

The man was walking in the road in the 900 block of Buchanan Street between Slim & Husky’s Pizza and Willie B’s Kitchen and Lounge around 6:45 p.m.

In 911 calls released by the MNPD, two different men reported a man in the street, pointing and cocking a gun and threatening people.

“He’s going to lose his life out here,” said one caller, identified only as Jerome.

Jerome told the dispatcher he wanted to watch out for the man in case he was mentally disabled.

Another caller, identified as Calvin, said the man hadn’t fired the gun and had dropped it three times.

Three-year MNPD veteran Dylan Ramos was the first officer on scene. He got out of his car and walked toward the man, who was walking away from him.

Surveillance footage shows the man drop something, pick it up, turn around and fling it into the air away from him before falling to the ground.

Ramos’ body worn camera footage shows him yelling, “Do not, do not touch that! Drop the gun! Drop the gun!” before shooting several times.

Ramos’ in-car camera footage shows him being fairly close to the man when he picks up something and turns around.

MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron said Ramos believed the man turned around in a threatening way. The gun was a semi-automatic pistol, he said.

Jerome stayed on the line after police arrived and sobbed, saying “don’t shoot him” over and over as shots rang out.

Other officers arrived and rendered aid.

The man died at a hospital, and efforts are underway to notify his family, police said.

Ramos has been placed on routine administrative assignment. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the MNPD will be investigating the incident.
