Centennial Park is in Phase 3 of a revitalization project that will bring improvements to the Park Plaza side of the park, including a new event pavilion on Lake Watauga.

The first two phases added improvements to the West End Avenue side of the park and the Great Lawn in the center.

Phase 3 will include a new event pavilion, access points connecting the West End side of the park to the Park Plaza side, a vehicle entrance on Park Plaza and the repurposing of the historic Croquet Clubhouse into a cafe.

John Tumminello, president of the Centennial Park Conservancy, said he expects the pavilion to be used for programming like the Big Band Dances in the summer, festivals and private events.

Centennial Park Conservancy is a non-profit support group of the park through a public-private partnership with Metro Parks.

The pavilion is currently in the design phase meaning construction probably won’t start until late next year.

Like the other phases of the project, half of the funding comes from the city and the other half is from private donations through the Centennial Park Conservancy.

HCA has been a major supporter of the project, Tumminello said, and Vanderbilt University recently announced a $750,000 gift.

This phase of the revitalization costs about $10 million, Tumminello said.

“It’s basically a multi-phase revitalization of Nashville’s Central Park to better serve current and future generations,” Tumminello said.

The revitalization is done in partnership between Metro and the Centennial Park Conservancy.

Local firms Dryden, HDLA and Collier are providing the architecture, landscape architecture and engineering services respectively.
