December weather history takes odd turns

After the round of winter weather and Arctic air that Middle Tennessee experienced for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, a likely warming trend will take our high temperatures into the upper 50s by Wednesday afternoon.

Colder weather and a chance of precipitation will return around New Year’s Eve.

Late December can bring a wide variation of rough weather across Middle Tennessee.

Dec. 23, 1963, brought a big snow storm with Tullahoma receiving 10 inches. Dec. 23, 1998, brought an ice storm to much of the area with numerous power outages.

On Christmas Eve 1988, a rare winter F4 tornado traveled from Franklin to Brentwood, destroying 54 homes with one fatality.

On New Year’s Eve 1951 the temperatures were in the 70s across Middle Tennessee with Nashville checking in at 76 degrees and Clarksville hitting 80.
