Two first-half touchdown runs from Casen Calmus and a strong defensive performance from Phillip Husband and others helped Brentwood Academy defeat Father Ryan 34-21 on Friday night at Catagnanni Stadium.
In the first quarter, both offenses scored. Brentwood Academy struck first on a 4-yard touchdown run by Calmus. Father Ryan quickly knotted the score on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Appalachian State commitment D.C. Tabscott to senior receiver Parker Erdman.
Brentwood Academy’s next drive ended with a field goal attempt that was blocked by Father Ryan sophomore Aden Nelson to keep the game tied 7-7.
In the second quarter, Brentwood Academy separated itself. After forcing Father Ryan to punt, the Eagles drove the ball downfield and made it count this time. Calmus found the end zone on an 8-yard run to give Brentwood Academy the lead. The Eagles then forced another Father Ryan punt and Teagen Lenderink nailed a 20-yard field goal just before halftime to make it 17-7 Eagles.
In the third quarter, the momentum went back and forth. Brentwood Academy started the half with a 51-yard kickoff return by Amare Biggers, which set up Lenderink to make a 48-yard field goal.
Caleb Brooks intercepted Tabscott on the next drive and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to increase the Brentwood Academy lead to 27-7.
It appeared the Eagles might run away with it at that point, but Father Ryan was not finished. Nelson blocked a Brentwood Academy punt and Bryshon Jackson capitalized on a 4-yard scoring run with 4:35 left in the third.
Father Ryan recovered the onside kick, but Zach Wesnofske later missed a 37-yard field goal try at the start of the fourth quarter. Five minutes later, Brentwood Academy delivered the dagger on an 86-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Brooks. That gave the Eagles a comfortable 34-14 advantage with 6:29 remaining.
Tabscott added a 24-yard touchdown run in the final minute. The senior finished with 214 yards on 14-of-31 passing and rushed for 88 yards on 23 attempts. Christian Smith led Father Ryan with five catches for 104 yards, while Erdman caught five balls for 64 yards.
Calmus had just 27 yards on seven carries to go along with his two touchdowns. Montiel was efficient and threw for 209 yards on 9-of-19 passing. Brooks (two receptions, 91 yards) Elijah Ealey (four receptions, 97 yards) were Brentwood Academy’s leading receivers.
Phillip Husband led the Eagles defense with 13 total tackles and 4.5 sacks of Brentwood Academy’s six sacks. Navy commitment Elijah Oatsvall added 12 tackles and a sack.
Brentwood Academy (5-0) will host Florence (Ala.) next Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. The Irish (0-2) are slated for a trip to Green Hill (0-4) the same night.
