Clarksville Academy imposed its will early to defeat Donelson Christian Academy 44-33 last Friday night.
Clarksville Academy took advantage from the tip, holding Donelson Christian to a single point in the first period. The Lady Wildcats did not make a field goal through the first 11 minutes of the game.
Despite forcing 11 turnovers in the first half, Clarksville Academy only held a 12-point lead at halftime. Head coach Carrie Daniels would like to see her team capitalize on more chances to grow the lead even larger.
“We started out in the full-court pressure and was able to get some things and some looks in transition,” Daniels said. “[We] didn’t capitalize on that transition every time. I think at times we’re a little worried about the defense instead of just focusing on the shot.”
The offense came alive in the third, scoring 17 points and extending the lead to 19 at the end of the period.
Clarksville Academy guard Sydneey Boykin led all scorers with 15 points. She said Daniels’ message to the team at halftime was pretty simple.
“She told us to just get it together,” Boykin said. “We kind of started off slow, a little sloppy, and she told us to get it together and play our basketball.”
Clarksville Academy added another win onto an impressive season.
The Lady Wildcats are not having the same season. They’ve struggled early in district play and Friday night, but it couldn’t be seen on their faces. The losing team appeared to be the happier team, cheering on their teammates with smiles on their faces.
Lady Wildcats head coach Karen Singer says that comes from achieving their team’s goals.
“Our goal right now, especially when you’re playing a good team like that, is to keep improving and getting better,” Singer said. “We’re trying to teach our kids to play hard the whole game. And I think they were happy that a couple things paid off for them when they work hard.”
