In Karen Singer’s first game as the Lady Wildcats’ head coach, Donelson Christian Academy defeated Nashville Central Christian, 43-31, on Nov. 22 at home.

Through the first three quarters, the shots did not fall for the Lady Wildcats. Despite getting decent looks from the outside, they only converted three attempts from beyond the arc, which led to a close, low-scoring game.

Trailing 27-26 heading into the fourth quarter, the game and the goal started to open.

Donelson Christian scored 17 points in the final quarter, including three three-pointers, and held Nashville Central Christian to just four points in the final period.

“Offensively, we had a little bit of jitters in our first home game and started hitting our threes later,” Singer said. “Bailey [Smith] hit a couple big threes for us in the second half.”

A Smith three pointer gave the Lady Wildcats a lead early in the fourth that would not be relinquished. Smith finished with 14 points and was thrilled to see the ball go in for her late in the game.

“In the first half, I wasn’t really hitting many,” Smith said. “Toward the second, after I got warmed up a little bit, it started falling in.”

Smith, one of two returning starters, was happy to see her team’s work start to pay off with their first win.

“Me being a senior, it feels amazing,” Smith said. “We’ve practiced this whole summer and coming into the start of the season. It just feels really good right now.”

Singer’s husband, Keith, is the current headmaster at Donelson Christian Academy, but he also serves as an assistant coach. The couple has spent some time coaching together in the past.

Smith is thrilled to play for both of them in her final season.

“I love her,” Smith said. “They’re some of the best coaches I’ve ever had. It’s just been a really good move for the program.”

Singer said she was happy to see her team get the win and hopes to be able to build off of it throughout the season.

“I’m excited for the girls,” Singer said. “When you’re at home, you want to get that win in front of all the fans. What it can build, is confidence for the girls going forward.”
